An Enugu-based legal practitioner, M. Chukwunonso Ogbe, has dragged the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Plateau State Government to court over the killing of a lion late last year.
The lion was shot dead on December 2, 2015 after it escaped from the Jos Wildlife Park apparently to prevent the animal from killing people.
In the case filed on October 18, 2016 at the Federal High Court Enugu as the case of Mr Chukwunonso Daniel
Ogbe vs the Attorney-General of the Federation & others, with suit No FHC/EN/CS/122/2016, the lawyer is
praying the court to declare that the failure of the respondents to provide dart-tranquilizers for the use of the officials of the park in capturing animal was what necessitated the use of live bullets.
He said it amounts to an abdication of the constitutional responsibility bestowed on the respondents to protect and
conserve wildlife, which consequently gave rise to the violation of the right of Nigerians to a general satisfactory
environment favourable for their development as provided under Article 24 of the African Charter.
Among other reliefs, the plaintiff wants the court to order the respondents to tender an apology to the Nigerian
public and which must be published in a widely read national daily for the reckless manner in which they handled the slain lion.
It would be recalled that the killing of the wild lion upon its escape from the Jos Wildlife Park on December 2,
attracted global condemnation by wildlife conservation activists who frowned at the inability of Plateau State Government to provide dart-tranquiliser for the capturing of wildlife alive.
